One Night in Miami. US. Prime Video

In an interesting moment in history, Black icons Sam Cooke, Malcolm X, Jim Brown, and Muhammad Ali find themselves in Miami for the historical battle between Sonny Liston and then-Cassius Clay. The four men were good friends, and they did spend time together on that historic evening, but the conversations are imagined. Each man’s backstory fleshes out the people that they were at the time, leading up to the intense dialogue after the fight ends.  Yes, the timeline has been tweaked for tv, but that’s okay. I learned so much from this excellent film — the casting was perfect, and even the talky nature of much of the film was so interesting that I was totally absorbed. Thanks, Regina King, for bringing this piece to the viewing audience.  πŸŽ₯ πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯

A Suitable Boy. UK. Acorn TV

What a well-told story of choices in love. Lata is of eligible age for marriage, and her mother is determined to find a perfect match for her. Set in the days following Indian independence and the creation of Pakistan, although Lata becomes infatuated with Muslim man, she knows their relationship can only succeed away from India. And then there’s a dreamy poet and a sweet shoe salesman. There’s also a sub-plot involving Maan, her brother-in-law’s brother, who becomes obsessed with a courtesan. The scenery, the romance, the politics, all make for a fascinating look into Indian culture. πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯

Emily in Paris. US. Netflix

I was prepared to actively dislike this show, but after a couple of episodes, I was okay with the main character speaking English in a French ad agency. I was also okay with the impossibility of Emily’s wardrobe — how could she afford all those adorable outfits and shoes?? You definitely need to buy into the artsy “willing suspension of disbelief.” Gorgeous visuals of the City of Lights certainly helped. A sweet confectionπŸ’‹ πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯πŸŽ₯

I watched Season 1 as a break from the darkness of Nordic noir a while back. I have no excuse for watching Season 2 — it’s an annoying show at best and flat and superficial at worst.  But I half-watched all 10 episodes anyway while working on my Wordscapes prowess. If you’re looking for mindless entertainment, this is your show. πŸŽ₯+
