A Suitable Boy. UK. Acorn TV

What a well-told story of choices in love. Lata is of eligible age for marriage, and her mother is determined to find a perfect match for her. Set in the days following Indian independence and the creation of Pakistan, although Lata becomes infatuated with Muslim man, she knows their relationship can only succeed away from India. And then there’s a dreamy poet and a sweet shoe salesman. There’s also a sub-plot involving Maan, her brother-in-law’s brother, who becomes obsessed with a courtesan. The scenery, the romance, the politics, all make for a fascinating look into Indian culture.
