Concrete Cowboy. US. Netflix
What an interesting find — a movie about North Philly urban cowboys, starring the amazing Idris Elba (Stringer Bell, Luther, and so many more), Caleb McLaughlin (SAG award winner for Stranger Things), and Jharrel Jerome (Emmy award winner for When They See Us). Teenager Cole, who is close to being expelled from his school, is driven and then dropped off by his Detroit-based mom to spend the summer with his estranged father in North Philadelphia. As you can imagine, things don’t go well at first, and Cole finds himself drawn to drug-dealing Smush rather than to his horseback-riding father. But he also discovers (when he ends up sleeping in a stable stall) that he has a knack for soothing a wild horse. Cole goes back and forth between those two lifestyles and in the process discovers what’s right for him. So many poignant moments — check out the backstory on how Elba came to be involved in this project.
