Ted Lasso. US. Apple TV +
Season Two
Another funny, poignant, surprising season of a wonderful show. We’re so used to bingeing series that we waited until the finale to watch all the episodes. The team now has the challenge of trying to move back up into the premier league. There’s also an incident with the team mascot and star goal-maker Dani Rojas that causes some stress. In comes Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, a sports psychologist, who ends up helping more people than just Dani. We find out more about Ted and his father along with a number of other parent-child relationships, all of which serve to flesh out the characters of Ted, Rebecca, Jamie, Sam, and Nate. And because Apple wanted to add 2 more episodes to the 10 already story-boarded, we get a lovely Christmas episode as well as a bizarre dreamscape based on the film After Hours, showcasing Coach Beard. And then there’s Nate…
You need to catch up if you haven’t yet done so. Can’t wait for Season 3.
Season One
This show first entered my consciousness when Jason Sudeikis won a Golden Globe while wearing a tie-dyed hoodie when almost every other nominee was dressed for an event. Hmmm, I thought. Let me just check this show out. Imagine my surprise when it was not only refreshing but also filmed in Richmond, UK, a place we normally visit annually. We loved the film Major League, and this tv show uses a similar premise: the new owner of a sports team tries to sabotage it by hiring people whose talents are obviously lacking. In this version, after a messy divorce, bitter Rebecca sets out to get revenge on her ex by hiring a mediocre American football coach as the new coach for her ex-husband’s beloved soccer team, which she’s gotten control of as part of the divorce settlement. From episode to episode, the team members, coaches, and even the new owner find themselves drawn to this Kansas-born, ever-optimistic coach, Ted Lasso. There are so many funny and also poignant moments in this series. I loved it.
