Orphan Black. Canada. Amazon Prime

So we just finished our annual viewing of this excellent show.  Sci-fi, woman-centric, LGBTQ-friendly, with a great sense of humor throughout, this series introduces us to Sarah, a grifter who witnesses a woman calmly take off her shoes, put her briefcase next to them, and jump in front of a subway train. After Sarah steals that briefcase, she opens it to discover that the now-deceased woman looks exactly like her. And so it begins, a fascinating journey into the world of bio-ethics, cloning, and power. Tatiana Maslany plays multiple characters through the five seasons of the show; she won a much-deserved Emmy in 2016. Many, many thanks to our friend Sakita for recommending this series to us.  🎥🎥🎥🎥

Ted Lasso. US. Apple TV +

Season Two Another funny, poignant, surprising season of a wonderful show. We’re so used to bingeing series that we waited until the finale to watch all the episodes. The team now has the challenge of trying to move back up into the premier league. There’s also an incident with the team mascot and star goal-maker Dani Rojas that causes some stress. In comes Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, a sports psychologist, who ends up helping more people than just Dani. We find out more about Ted and his father along with a number of other parent-child relationships, all of which serve to flesh out the characters of Ted, Rebecca, Jamie, Sam, and Nate. And because Apple wanted to add 2 more episodes to the 10 already story-boarded, we get a lovely Christmas episode as well as a bizarre dreamscape based on the film After Hours, showcasing Coach Beard. And then there’s Nate…  You need to catch up if you haven’t yet done so. Can’t wait for Season 3. Season One This show first entered my consciousness when ...

Concrete Cowboy. US. Netflix

What an interesting find — a movie about North Philly urban cowboys, starring the amazing Idris Elba (Stringer Bell, Luther, and so many more), Caleb McLaughlin (SAG award winner for Stranger Things), and Jharrel Jerome (Emmy award winner for When They See Us). Teenager Cole, who is close to being expelled from his school, is driven and then dropped off by his Detroit-based mom to spend the summer with his estranged father in North Philadelphia. As you can imagine, things don’t go well at first, and Cole finds himself drawn to drug-dealing Smush rather than to his horseback-riding father. But he also discovers (when he ends up sleeping in a stable stall) that he has a knack for soothing a wild horse.  Cole goes back and forth between those two lifestyles and in the process discovers what’s right for him. So many poignant moments — check out the backstory on how Elba came to be involved in this project. Also  check out the gofundme page of the Philadelphia Urban Riding A...

We have watched 13 seasons and are now mid-season in #14. The show is mostly murder light with touches of science and history. Comedy plays a significant part in this series as well. The characters are fun to watch, and the storylines often had me looking up various characters to find out if they were actually real people (most of the time, they were!). What an enjoyable way to spend tv time during the pandemic. 🎥🎥🎥🎥
